We immediately clicked with both Angela and Kathryn and being comfortable with your doula is so important. We could immediately tell that they were very knowledgeable and dedicated. In comparing them to other doulas, they had the most experience and were the most interested in supporting us throughout the entire process with meetings before and after we delivered. There were no weird loop holes when it came to labor and delivery, we knew they’d be there for us if and when we needed them. They provided great tips and recommendations but also the resources to make our own decisions and never tried to push their own preferences on us.

Our goals were to be calm and informed and for pain to be controlled without epidural if possible. I ended up choosing an epidural eventually but Angela’s support and teaching my husband to help manage my pain while I went through 24 hours of labor augmentation without medication was incredible. They helped me with my back pain during pregnancy, provided tips to get and keep baby’s head in the correct position for delivery, and empowered me in making decisions after I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Angela was an incredibly strong, calming and supportive presence throughout our labor and delivery. A nurse pressured me on day 1 to supplement with formula and I felt terrible that I refused, I texted and they immediately wrote me back with a well researched and supportive response, which, later, my pediatrician agreed with. They have been incredible answering questions and providing monthly meetings since we delivered that I couldn’t put a price on!

Every workshop was so helpful. The birth planning and pain management were especially, I wish every parent could attend. The postpartum meetings are an amazing excuse to get out of the house with a newborn, which is daunting at first. Being in a safe space with other parents who are going through the same changes raising a newborn and continuing to get tips and resources from the doulas is amazing. I initially was looking for a doula for pain management and to help my husband to support me during labor and delivery. I ended up finding incredible support and advice around naturally flipping my baby to head down position, managing terrible back pain, gestational diabetes, breastfeeding and sleep.

The incredible care, attention, confidence and knowledge that Angela and Kathryn bring to every interaction is so important during one of the most intense and special times in a person’s life and we are so grateful to have found them! They are just amazing. I wish they could doula my life! They are so calm, caring, knowledgeable and attentive. My husband and I had not witnessed good experiences with doulas in the past and so we were hesitant but we are so grateful to have found Angela and Kathryn. As soon as we got to our postpartum room with our new baby we looked at each other and said “What would we have done without Angela?” They uniquely provide incredible support before during and after labor and delivery and they continue to help us through this major transition in our lives. My husband and I interviewed 5+ doulas and decided to go with Kathryn and Angela because I felt comfortable with both of them when we first met. I also liked knowing the fact that it would be rare to have neither of them with me when I’m going through labor because there are two of them.

I really wanted a natural birth. They both supported my decisions made along the course of labor despite dealing with the stubborn me! Ultimately I had an empowered birthing experience with no regrets to the decisions I made.

Hiring them was absolutely the best decision we have ever made. We ended up with a 53 hour labor. They were there the whole time endlessly making sure all me and my husband’s needs were met. We could not have done this without their continuous support and care.

During pregnancy they were very quick to respond via text/phone and we found the group workshops helpful. It was also helpful being able to smile about the ups and downs of our shared birthing experiences at the postpartum meetings. Alyssa ~ Dublin, CA

We chose to hire Angela and Kathryn because it was clear they were passionate about what they do and have a lot of knowledge. We also really liked that they work as a team to greatly reduce the chances that a backup doula would be with us for the birth.

Our main goal was to make sure mom and baby were safe and healthy. We had a strong preference for a natural birth. We wanted to have a guide, an ally, to counter all that being in a hospital entails. Kathryn’s presence in the hospital environment was a calming and centering counter to all the interruptions and unnatural things inevitable in the hospital, especially with a baby coming one month early – beeping, monitors on my belly, lights, nurses in and out frequently, last minute pushes to take antibiotics, steroids, and a host of other unexpected questions that came up. In the end, although we decided to augment once it was over 18 hours since the water broke, I didn’t take any pain meds. I feel very grateful for this amazing experience and I really don’t think I could’ve done it without Kathryn there with us with her calm and reassuring presence helping us feel our way through each decision and each contraction.

It was also incredibly reassuring having Kathryn and Angela to reach out to leading up to the birth, and after the birth, for referrals to local resources, suggestions for books and other sources of information, and an invitation to a community of fellow new parents. We would’ve loved to attend the group meetings, but baby came one month early. We met with them both on a Thursday night and made the text to them that labor had started less than three days later on Sunday morning. And still, even though we had just begun our relationship, we immediately felt so comfortable with Kathryn.

The return on our investment in doulas was immeasurable. Money comes and goes. This was the most awe inspiring beautiful time of our lives, and having Kathryn with us was priceless. Christine ~ Oakland, Ca

We chose to hire Angela and Kathryn because we found their presence to be comforting. We also loved the pre and post classes that they offered. Our goals were to have as easy of a delivery as possible and to have someone to help us make non-judgemental informed decisions that resonated with us.

I had just had a difficult pregnancy since I had hyperemesis and kidney stones. I couldn’t control those conditions so I wanted assistance in making the labor and delivery as easy as it could be. Let’s just say I wouldn’t want to deliver a baby without a doula. Having Kathryn help me labor at home so I could avoid the hospital as long as possible was so incredibly worth it.

Kathryn’s knowledge and composure and the way she made us feel comfortable really stands out about our experience. I couldn’t imagine labor and delivery without Kathryn. I just felt so taken care of.

We found the group workshops extremely valuable. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend several because of our calendars syncing, but I would have loved to attend more.

The postpartum group meetings were totally helpful. I loved connecting with other moms. Jamie ~ Walnut Creek, CA

I wanted an experienced support person with me during labor and delivery who would be my advocate at the hospital. I was feeling afraid of labor, and wanted help with pain management, and knowing what to expect.

My goals for my birth were a vaginal delivery with epidural. Although the hospital protocol made it so that I couldn’t get the epidural as fast as needed, Kathryn gave me the strength, positions, breathing and courage to keep pushing even before the epidural.

Fast, clear responses to questions before labor started, and staying by my side through the most critical times during labor are 2 things that really stand out about my experience. I found Kathryn’s help in physically moving me into position for pushing during labor, massage, clarifying what was going to happen when nurses and doctors did not, all very valuable.

Though hard to quantify, my experience in the hospital would have likely resulted in C Section if it weren’t for the strength and hands on relief Kathryn offered. Though the birth didn’t go according to plan, the healthy baby placed on my chest at the end of it all was the best return on investment I could ever want. Lina ~ Danville, CA

I chose to hire Your East Bay Doulas, in part, because the group workshops really appealed to me. I liked hearing about others’ experiences and benefited from their questions.

My goal was to have an unmedicated birth and labor mostly at home. I have Kaiser and knew I would not be able to choose my caregiver/delivery team at the hospital. I wanted a doula who knew my birth plan and preferences to be my advocate when I was unable to think/communicate during labor. Having Angela at home with us gave me the confidence that I would know when to go to the hospital. I ended up going in at 9 cm! Angela was able to recognize my needs and communicate them to others when I could not. This is a skill that Angela has and it really helped me.

I got exactly what I wanted in hiring a doula: the confidence that came with having a knowledgeable professional and advocate present.

The group workshops were good confidence builders and great for my partner to attend with me. The birth plan workshop was especially helpful because it gave me homework to do that made me feel prepared.

Both Kathryn and Angela were very responsive, easy to talk to, and able to provide a wealth of resources when I had questions. I texted about mastitis postpartum and got helpful information. Our postpartum meeting was a good follow up to that. Samantha ~ Hercules, CA

In California, I live far away from family and although I have friends in the Bay Area, I didn’t have “that person” that I would want with me in the delivery room. If I did live near family, that person would have been my mother or sisters. I knew I had a supportive male partner but yearned to have the emotional support of another woman who had been through childbirth, herself, before and, of course, had the educational/medical knowledge to help me make decisions that I would feel good about during labor/delivery. I found what I was seeking in Your East Bay Doulas (YEBD).

I had been really turned off when I read other doula service web pages that outlined time restrictions for labor support (for example, “your fee covers 10 hours of doula support for labor”) as well as all these extra costs for additional services. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that YEBD had no such time cap and their price point for services was extremely clear and all-inclusive of many services. I chose YEBD mainly off of my first impression and instinct from our first meeting. I felt as though I connected personally, with both Angela and Kathryn- that they were both knowledgeable and personable- and felt as though I would be lucky to have them a part of our family team. Choosing a doula is an incredibly important decision and I know I made the best choice for my family and I.

My main goals for birth were to be able to be informed ahead of time so that while I was “in the moment” I could make decisions as they came up. I wanted to know my options but not be so rigid in the planning process that I couldn’t switch gears, if necessary. Although I didn’t take up YEBD on their workshop offerings (because I already was enrolled in workshops through my hospital), YEBD helped answer lingering questions that I had about the information I received and provided me with additional resources.

Kathryn of YEBD was my doula on “the day of” and I couldn’t have asked for a better doula experience. Her reassuring words throughout my labor and suggestions for my comfort/care were so helpful. I appreciated that she would share her knowledge of what was happening to me in the delivery room and that she would advocate for my family (my partner and I, my baby) throughout. She was selfless with her care and the love she professionally brought along to the job was undeniable. It seemed like a long 17 hours in the middle of the experience, but with her help, those hours were much more comfortable. I will forever be grateful to her and consider her “family” for her role and support during my son’s birth.

I found the emotional/physical support in the midst of a seemingly scary/anxiety-inducing moment was so valuable. Kathryn’s presence calmed and comforted me and empowered me so that I was able to better enjoy the birthing experience. Melissa ~ Pittsburg, CA
